Frequently Asked Questions about Ritchie Waterers

Will Ritchie waterers freeze?

When installed properly with insulation, thermal tubes, and sealed chambers, Ritchie units resist freezing. Their insulated casings and efficient heaters help maintain reliability even in extreme cold.

How to repair the valve & float?

Most repairs are straightforward and do not need a special skill set to maintain. The easiest repair is to replace the entire float or valve that coordinates with your waterer model. Valve rubbers, individual float arms and small repair kits are available if needed. For more details information, visit our Youtube channel. https://www.youtube.com/@PeteCoSupply/videos

What valve capacity do I need?

Ritchie valves are available in two sizes and multiple pressure ratings. Determine if you have a 1/2" valve found in smaller units or the 3/4" valve found in larger units. Select the valve that accommodates the water pressure (PSI) AT THE UNIT for trouble free use.

Does Ritchie offer warranties?

Yes – typically a 10-year warranty (portions 5 year full, 5 year prorated) on the waterer body and 1 year on parts.

Can I convert a non-heated unit to heated?

In certain models, yes — with proper heater kits and wiring. But some waterers are not designed for retrofitting heating, so check compatibility first.

Ritchie waterers are long-term installations. Think 10-30 years. Installing electricity to the unit regardless if you are planning on using it, at the time of install, will allow you to add heat components at a later time if needed.

How to maintain a Ritchie waterer?

Periodically drain and clean the unit, inspect the valve and drain plug, clean the float/valve chamber, remove debris, and test the heaters in cold conditions before it gets severe.

Additional winter preparation, use an all weather sealant along the base of the unit and the concrete pad to prevent air gaps. Add water or vegetable oil to water seal grooves to create a seal against the cold weather.

How Do I Repair or Replace Ritchie Waterer Parts?

Most parts are available for Ritchie waterers new and old. Identify your model by visiting our shop by unit page and replace worn components like:
valves,
floats,
or valve chamber covers.
Each part is available individually and installs easily with standard tools.

How Do I Prevent My Ritchie Waterer Valve from Freezing?

Installation of your Ritchie Waterer is Key. Do not take shortcuts as these may cause freezing issues during the winter. During installation, ensure that your waterline is centered in a riser tube to create airspace. This will prevent frost from carrying over to the waterline. Do not add fill or insulation below the unit or in the riser tube.

Add heat in freezing climates and test each heater to ensure that they are properly installed and working prior to winter. Replace heaters and/or thermostat if needed.

Use an all weather sealant along the base of the unit and the concrete pad to prevent air gaps.

Fill water seal grooves with water to create a seal against the cold and wind.

Thrifty King models - Ensure that your ball closures are seated about 1/2" - 1" below the rim to allow water to drain off of the side.

Where are Ritchie Waterers Made?

Ritchie Industries is located in the heart of farm country in Conrad, Iowa. With over 100 years in the watering industry, Ritchie Industries has a rich history of reliability and durability that is expected from Made in the USA products.

How do Ritchie Waterers Prevent Algae Growth?

Ritchie offers a wide variety of styles. Some with covers, others are open trough. The open trough and Ecofount series are extremely easy to clean. During times of high algae potential, regular cleaning will help prevent the onset and continuance of algae growth.

Installation Tips & Best Practices

  • Use a Ritchie-recommended insulated thermal riser tube (8″ inner / 12″ outer) to protect your water line from frost.
  • Set the waterer on a stable concrete pad or base and ensure it’s level.
  • Slope your supply line and avoid low spots where water can freeze.
  • Seal the valve chamber tightly to block cold air infiltration.
  • Test heating elements before winter and check that floats move freely.

Why Choose Ritchie Waterers?

Ritchie fountains are built for longevity and energy efficiency—using up to 75% less energy than conventional concrete tanks. Their insulated polyethylene construction prevents cracking, while the automatic valve and float system ensures consistent refilling with minimal oversight.
