How the 66B works (quick technical overview)

The 66B’s thermostatic gas control modulates heat to keep an opening in the ice. The combustion chamber sits under a boot in the tank, warming water locally; automatic safety controls (AGA-listed) help ensure safe operation while maintaining water access for livestock.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the 66B work without electricity?

Yes. It runs on LP or Natural Gas and is designed for remote locations or where grid power is limited.

How much water will it keep open?

Field reports and dealer notes commonly cite ~3–5 feet of open water around the boot, depending on wind, tank size, and air temps.

What comes in Kit #15000?

The package comes with the 66B heater + hookup kit (propane hookup kit), along with the powder-coated casing and the removable control/burner assembly.

What gas control does the 66B use?

Modern assemblies (post-2017) use the Robert Shaw (Robertshaw) Unitrol 7000SLC. If you’re replacing a control, verify your assembly style (top vs. side knob) and manufacture date for compatibility.

How long will a propane tank last?

A common benchmark: ~30 days on a 100-lb LP tank, but run-time varies by climate, wind exposure, and setpoint.

Is the burner easy to service?

Yes. The control & burner assembly is designed to be removed for servicing, and adjustable brackets make it useful on multiple stock tank designs.

Is there an installation manual?

Yes—Trojan publishes a User’s Manual & Troubleshooting Guide with gas hookup notes, regulator placement, moisture purge, and bulb/line protection guidance which is included in the package.

Is the 66B AGA-Listed

Yes, it uses an AGA-listed automatic control for safe operation.

Can I install it myself?

Yes! Follow the official manual and local gas codes; many producers install it themselves, but professional installation is recommended where required.

What’s included with #15000 vs. other SKUs?

The Trojan 66B #15000 includes the the Trojan 66B heater with hookup kit.

Installation: step-by-step highlights

Always follow the official manual and local code. The summary below highlights recurring best-practice points from Trojan resources.

  1. Unbox & identify parts (heater body, burner/control, hookup kit, brackets).
  2. Mount to tank using the adjustable brackets; keep the unit slightly leaning forward to shed condensation. petecosupply
  3. Gas hookup: Regulator typically within ~7 ft; connect flexible hose from regulator to heater fitting. Blow out lines to purge moisture before connecting.
  4. Protect the hose assembly and sensing bulb from livestock damage (routing and shielding).
  5. Lighting: Follow the burner lighting procedure (Trojan has video quick-guides).
  6. Verify operation: Confirm flame stability, thermostat response, and water opening growth over the first 24–48 hours.

Winter storage & maintenance: When not in use, turn off gas, remove the heater, and store the burner assembly dry—do not wrap the Unitrol in plastic. trojanlivestock.com

Common troubleshooting (fast fixes)

  • Won’t stay lit → Check regulator placement, purge moisture, confirm adequate LP level, inspect thermocouple/sensing bulb routing and draft exposure.
  • Insufficient open water → Evaluate wind exposure, boot position, thermostat setting, and fuel supply; confirm brackets and forward lean for condensation runoff.
  • Aging controls → Post-2017 assemblies may use Unitrol 7000SLC; verify control style before ordering replacement.

Parts & upgrades frequently paired with the 66B

  • Complete Burner Assembly (for rebuilds and older units)
  • Robert Shaw / Robertshaw Unitrol 7000SLC (post-2017 gas control)
  • Pilot assemblies, hoses, regulators, hookup kits (propane)
