Five gallons across 28 in., still only 14 in. wide. Hoskins calls it a horse and cattle waterer and builds it for fence lines.

What you are getting

  1. Stainless steel tank, 5 gallons (19 litres)
  2. Overall 28 in. long by 14 in. wide by 16 in. tall
  3. Insulated galvanized steel frame, 75 lb. empty
  4. One Model A element, 250 watts total, held off the tank
  5. 3/8 in. RM 153
  6. 1 1/2 in. rubber stopper on the drain
  7. Rated for horses and cattle, fence line

Set the waterer, then the fence

Leave room around the frame so it sits level on its pad and the posts do not touch it. A unit fenced in on all four sides cannot be lifted out when the valve goes.

How Hoskins builds them

A HC14-16 is a stainless tank of 5 gallons sitting inside a 16 gauge galvanized shell, with insulation between them and the Model A element carried in the shell rather than bolted to the tank.

The RM 153 float-and-valve assembly, 3/8 in., sits in an insulated compartment of their own behind a lift-off cover, so a repair in January does not mean emptying the tank. The drain stopper is 1 1/2 in..

At 28 by 14 in. and 75 lb. empty it takes up very little of a stall, and the 16 in. frame fixes the drinking height.

Putting one in

The water line and the power both come up inside the base of a HC14-16, so one trench carries both and the stub-ups have to land inside a 28 by 14 in. footprint. Set a reinforced pad roughly 36 by 22 in. and stand it a few inches above the ground around it, which keeps muck from packing against the frame.

Electrically the Model A element pulls 2.1 amps on 120 volts, so its own 15 amp circuit is enough. Ask whoever wires it to confirm the earth at the same visit. Stray voltage is the usual reason stock go off a waterer that is working perfectly well, and it is almost never the first thing anyone checks.

Read your water pressure at the unit rather than at the well, and read it more than once in a day. At 75 lb. empty two people can set this one, which is part of why it ships by UPS. Hoskins puts the rating at horses and cattle on a fence line.

More about the HC14-16

Parts the HC14-16 takes

Valve: 3/8 in. RM 153 (no separate float rod on this model). Drain stopper: 1 1/2 in.. Heating element: Model A, 250 watts at 120 volts.

Every one of those is a stock item here. The full list for this model is in the collection further down the page.

Shipping and pick-up

At 75 lb. the HC14-16 goes out by UPS ground, the same way a box of parts does, so there is no freight quote to wait on.

Pick-up at Hoskins, NE is available if you would sooner collect it.

Dimensions and weight

Overall 28 in. long by 14 in. wide by 16 in. tall. Tank capacity 5 gallons. Weight empty 75 lb.

Allow a pad a few inches wider than the frame on every side, standing above the surrounding ground so muck does not pack against it.

Keeping it running

Flush the tank weekly through the cold months and check that the 1 1/2 in. stopper is seating on clean rubber. The 3/8 in. RM 153 assembly is the one wearing part worth a spare.

If stock suddenly go off a waterer that is working, check the ground at the breaker box before anything else. Stray voltage puts animals off water and nothing looks wrong.
